GODNIGHT

"The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night His song shall be with me - a prayer to the God of my life." Psalm 42:8.

For many years I heard and also said the words, "Good night" (expressing good wishes at parting at night or before going to bed). What if we could have something even better? What if we could have a GODNIGHT?  That is, a night filled with the presence of God. The Apostle Paul encourages us with these words: "and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren (fellow members of the Body of Christ), whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue (behavior showing high moral standards) and if there is anything praiseworthy - meditate on these things" (Philippians 4:7-8). And in Hebrews 13:5, we have God's promise of His abiding presence: "I will never leave you nor forsake you."

I recently received a scare through a voice mail. It was very threatening to say the least. I found that I could either give all my attention to the false threat or trust in a promise of God found in His Holy Word: "You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You" (Isaiah 26:3). Another promise of God is found in Psalm 4:8: "I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.” Now with the promises of God, and a soft pillow, I was able to have a Godnight.

There are many different things in life that require our attention through the day. And sometimes without thought, we find ourselves drawn away by the cares of the world. That is why it is so important for the Child of God to stay close to God. James 4:8 tells us to "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you." If you are reading these words, it means that you have the breath of your Creator keeping you alive, and that you still have a purpose for living. I don't have all the answers to life itself, but the One that knows you best does.

Let me share some words of instruction found in the Word of life, that will help prepare you to have a GODNIGHT.  Psalm 1 shows us three things:

(1) the holiness and happiness of a godly man (a person that has the right attitude towards God, living a life that is well pleasing to him, both in godly fear and reverence) verses1-3.

(2) the sinfulness and misery of a wicked man (a person with a mental disregard for righteousness, justice, truth, honor, virtue; evil in thought and life) verses 4-5.

(3) the ground and reason for both (see Matthew Henry’s Commentary). Verse 6 says: "For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly shall perish (be destroyed).”

The whole truth is that we all want to be happy and at peace with the One that loves us the most, Our Heavenly Father.

Romans 5:6-8 gives us an amazing truth: "For when we were still without strength, in due time (at the right time) Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”  It doesn't get any better than that!

I find that life is filled with uncertainties. Life doesn't always go the way we plan. Acts16:9-31 records some of those uncertainties. The Apostle Paul is being led by a vision from God to go and preach the gospel (good news of the death, burial, and resurrection) of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In verse 22, Paul and Silas (after being beaten with rods) were thrown into a cold, wet prison. Do you think they knew that, as they headed out that day, they would find themselves locked up with the possibility of being put to death? Then in verse 25, "Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God." Can you believe these servants of God? First beaten, and then imprisoned, and yet praising God! Maybe now is the time to ask yourself, what keeps me singing through the uncertainties that life offer you?  I will have to be honest with you. After all these years of knowing God's Son, Jesus, as my Lord and Savior, I would have a hard time singing after losing the freedom that I am so used to having if I didn't know the Word of God, such as, “The Lord is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation; He is my God, and I will praise Him” (Exodus 15:2). And Psalm 28:6-7 says: “Blessed be the Lord, because He has heard the voice of my supplications (requests)! The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart greatly rejoices, and with my song I will praise Him."

Well, now we know what kept Paul and Silas singing, even in physical pain, suffering, and imprisonment.  Paul and Silas are great examples of Christianity in action. And, the Word of God says, “Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:6-7).

Now take God at His word and have a GODNIGHT.

P.S. because God loves you very much.

“The Lord will give grace (favor) and glory;
No good thing will He withhold
From those who walk uprightly.”
(Psalm 84:11)
